CapCut Template Black Screen: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Quick answer

A CapCut template black screen usually means the template's effects, music or your own clips did not load properly, most often because of a weak connection, low storage, a broken cache or a video format your phone struggles with. Start with the quick fixes: wait, switch to stable Wi-Fi, free up space, clear CapCut's cache and update the app. If the video turns black only after export, lower the export settings and export again.

Quick answer: Restart CapCut, connect to strong Wi-Fi and give the template up to a minute to load its effects. If it is still black, free up storage, clear the cache inside CapCut and update the app from the official store. If only your own clip is black, it is probably an HEVC, HDR or 4K file: save a 1080p copy and add that instead.

What does a CapCut template black screen mean?

A black screen in a CapCut template means the app could not draw the picture, so it shows black instead. It can happen at four different moments, and each one points to a different cause. Knowing which one you have saves a lot of time.

  • Black preview before you start. The template shows black or a spinning circle. This is nearly always loading, network or app version.
  • Black slots after adding clips. The template plays, but your photo or video is black. This points to the file: its format, its size, or a clip stored only in the cloud.
  • Black video after export. Editing looked fine, but the saved file is black. Usually an interrupted export, settings too high, or the video player.
  • Black on purpose. Some templates open with a black frame, a fade-in or a dark gap before the beat drop. If the preview on the template page shows it too, nothing is broken.

Why does a CapCut template show a black screen?

How to fix a CapCut template black screen, step by step

Work through this CapCut template black screen fix in order. The first steps are quick and solve most cases, so do not jump straight to reinstalling. Menu and button names may differ slightly by app version.

  1. Wait for loading. Templates download effects, fonts and music the first time you open them. Give it up to a minute on a good connection.
  2. Restart CapCut. Close it fully from your recent apps and open it again. This clears many temporary glitches.
  3. Fix your connection. Move to strong Wi-Fi or a better mobile signal, and turn off data saver or Low Data Mode for CapCut.
  4. Free up storage. Templates need room to save effects and build previews. Delete old videos, downloads or apps you do not use.
  5. Clear CapCut's cache. Open your profile in CapCut, tap the settings gear and choose Clear cache. On Android you can also go to Settings, then Apps, then CapCut, then Storage, then Clear cache. Avoid Clear data or Clear storage unless your drafts are backed up.
  6. Update CapCut. Install the latest version from Google Play or the App Store, since newer templates can use effects older versions cannot show. Our CapCut APK download guide explains how to check and update safely.
  7. Replace the problem clip. If only your clip is black, swap it for a 1080p file, as explained in the next section.
  8. Restart the phone, then reinstall as a last resort. A reboot frees memory. If nothing else works, reinstall CapCut from the official store, but back up important drafts first.

Is your own clip causing the black screen?

If the template's own parts play but your slot is black, the cause is almost always the file you added. Modern phones save video in formats that save space but are heavy to decode.

HEVC and HDR videos

HEVC (also called H.265) and HDR video are common on newer phones. Some phones, especially budget models, struggle to decode them inside an effect-heavy template, so the slot turns black. On iPhone, you can set Settings, then Camera, then Formats to Most Compatible, and turn off HDR Video under Record Video for future clips. On Android, look for high efficiency video or HDR options in camera settings; names differ by brand.

4K and 60fps clips

A 4K 60fps clip carries a lot of data, and a mid-range phone can choke once filters and transitions stack up. For most templates, 1080p is plenty, because Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok play on phone screens. Keep 60fps for slow motion CapCut templates, where extra frames make the slowed parts smooth, and lower the resolution there instead.

Clips stored in the cloud

If your phone keeps only small previews while the full video lives in iCloud or Google Photos, CapCut may get a file it cannot play. Open the video in your gallery and let it fully download, or use the Download option in Google Photos, then add it again.

For an old clip that keeps failing, export a 1080p copy from CapCut's normal editor or your phone's own video editor, then use that copy in the template. This often solves it.

Why is my exported video black?

Sometimes the edit looks perfect, but the saved file shows a black screen in the gallery or on social apps. A CapCut template video black screen after export is a different problem from a black preview, with different fixes.

Export again, safely

Keep CapCut open and the screen on until the export finishes. Do not switch apps or take calls. On a mid-range phone, choose 1080p and 30fps instead of 4K or 60fps, and check you have free storage first.

Check the saved file

Play the video in a different player or file manager. A gallery thumbnail can stay black for a while even when the video plays fine. If it plays elsewhere, the file is good.

Black after upload

If the video turns black or washed out on Instagram or WhatsApp, HDR is a common reason. Turn off HDR in the export options if your version shows it, export at 1080p and let the upload finish processing.

Our CapCut template download guide explains export resolution, frame rate and where the video is saved on Android and iPhone.

Fixing the CapCut black screen problem on PC

The CapCut black screen problem can also appear in the desktop app or on capcut.com. Update the app, update your graphics driver from your computer or graphics card maker, and close heavy programs such as games or dozens of browser tabs. On the web, refresh the page or try another browser.

Most templates are built for the phone app, though. If a template will not play on your computer, move it to your phone with the CapCut template QR code on its page and finish the edit there.

When the template itself is the problem

Sometimes your phone is fine and the template is broken. A creator may have used an effect or song that was later removed, or the template may have been taken down. The signs: the black part appears in the same spot every time, even with fresh clips. Check the preview on the template page; if it is black there too, the edit is simply made that way.

No setting will fix a broken template. Pick a similar edit from our new trend CapCut templates instead. If a template says it is not available or the Use Template button is missing, read CapCut template not showing.

How can you prevent black screens next time?

  • Update regularly. Keep CapCut updated from Google Play or the App Store.
  • Keep free space. Leave a few GB free so effects and exports have room.
  • Shoot in a safe format. 1080p, standard format and HDR off work with nearly every template.
  • Open new templates on Wi-Fi. The first load downloads the most data.
  • Clear the deck before export. Close background apps and keep the phone cool.
  • Learn the basics once. Our guide on how to use a CapCut template shows how to add, crop and replace clips cleanly.

Skip any "no black screen" or "Pro unlocked" CapCut mod APK. These files can carry malware, stop getting updates and put your account at risk, and they do not fix the real cause. Also note that CapCut has been blocked in India since 2020. If templates will not load at all where you live, that is a region limit, not a black screen bug, and we do not share VPN workarounds.

Questions people ask

Why is my CapCut template showing a black screen only on my clips?

When the template plays but your slot stays black, the clip is usually the problem. HEVC, HDR or 4K 60fps files can be too heavy for some phones, and clips stored only in iCloud or Google Photos may not be fully on the device. Download the original, or save a 1080p copy, and add it again.

Does clearing the CapCut cache delete my drafts?

Clearing the cache usually removes temporary files and downloaded effects, which download again when needed, while your drafts stay. Clearing app data or storage in Android settings is different and can wipe local drafts. Back up important drafts before you use that option or reinstall the app.

Can slow internet cause the CapCut black screen problem?

Yes. A template downloads its effects, fonts and music the first time you open it. If the connection drops halfway, parts of the template can stay black. Switch to stable Wi-Fi, turn off data saver for CapCut, close the template and open it again so it can finish loading.

Why is my exported CapCut video black in the gallery?

The export may have been interrupted, storage may have filled up during saving, or the gallery thumbnail has not refreshed yet. Play the file in another player first. If it is really black, export again at 1080p and 30fps, keep CapCut open and the screen on until it finishes.

Will reinstalling CapCut fix a template black screen?

Sometimes, but it should be your last step. Reinstalling can delete drafts saved only on your phone. Try waiting, restarting, freeing storage, clearing the cache and updating first. If you do reinstall, get CapCut only from Google Play or the App Store, never from an unknown APK site.

Is a no black screen CapCut mod APK safe to use?

No. Modded or Pro unlocked CapCut files are not official, can contain malware, stop receiving updates and may get your account restricted. They also do not fix the real causes, which are loading, storage, cache, app version or clip format. Our CapCut APK guide covers safe sources.
