What is a CapCut template, and how does it work?
A CapCut template is a finished edit with empty spaces for your media. A creator sets the song, the cuts, the transitions, the effects and the text, then shares it. When you use it, CapCut drops your clips into those spaces and renders a brand new video. You get a trending style in minutes without building the edit yourself.
Every template is built around slots. Each slot has a fixed length, often just a second or two, and the template plays the slots in order, timed to the beat. This is why the number of clips and the duration shown on every template card on CCTemplates matter: they tell you exactly what to prepare before you open CapCut.
Prepare your clips before you start
Good clips matter more than the template. Spend a few minutes on this and the result looks far better.
- Shoot vertical Record in 9:16 so your clips fill the frame on Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok without heavy cropping.
- Go a little long Make each clip a couple of seconds longer than its slot. CapCut needs footage to trim, and you get to choose the best part.
- Use 60fps for motion If the template has slow motion or speed ramps, record at 60fps so the slowed parts stay smooth.
- Find good light Face a window or shoot outdoors before sunset. Dark clips turn grainy once effects and filters are added.
- Mix your shots Combine close-ups, wide shots and moving shots. Ten clips from the same angle feel repetitive, even with great transitions.
How to use CapCut template links, step by step
Here is the full flow, from a template on our site to a saved video. Button names may differ slightly by app version, but the order is the same on Android and iPhone.
- Pick a template. Browse our new trend CapCut templates and open one with a clip count you can fill. Play the preview with sound so you know where the beat drops.
- Open it in CapCut. Tap Use Template in CapCut on the template page. The link should open the CapCut app directly. If it opens in your browser instead, try the backup link on the same page.
- Tap Use template. CapCut shows the creator's preview with a Use template button. Tap it and wait while the music, effects and fonts load.
- Select your media. Your gallery opens with numbered slots along the bottom, each showing the length it needs. Tap your photos or videos in order. To change a pick, tap that slot and choose again.
- Tap Next. The button may say Next or Preview. CapCut processes your clips and shows the finished edit.
- Edit your clips. Tap any clip to replace it, crop it or change its volume. Open the Text tab, if the template has one, to type your own words.
- Preview the whole video. Watch it at least twice, once with sound and once without, and fix any clip that looks out of place.
- Export. Tap Export, choose 1080p for social media and keep the app open until it finishes. Our CapCut template download guide explains export settings and where the file is saved.
How do you choose which clip goes in which slot?
The order you select clips in is the order they play. This is the step most beginners rush, and it decides whether the edit looks planned or random.
- Start strong. The first slot is your hook. Use your most eye-catching clip, because viewers decide in a second or two whether to keep watching.
- Match the beat drop. Find the slot where the music hits hardest and put your boldest moment there: a jump, a turn, a reveal.
- Short slots, simple shots. A half-second slot needs a clip that reads instantly, like a face or a single object. Save busy scenes for longer slots.
- End with a closer. The final slot should feel like an ending: a smile, a wave, a wide shot or your best photo.
For trending CapCut template use, timing matters too. Trends move fast, so get your clips ready first, then fill the template while the sound is still popular. Photo-only templates follow the same rules, and you will find plenty in our CapCut photo template collection.
Editing your clips inside a template
After CapCut builds the preview, you can fine-tune each clip. Tap a clip in the strip at the bottom of the screen to see its options. The table shows what the common options do.
| Option | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Replace | Swaps the clip for another photo or video from your gallery | A clip looks blurry, dark or wrong for that moment |
| Crop | Lets you choose which part of the clip plays, and often reframe it | The slot shows a dull moment, or a face is cut off |
| Volume | Turns your clip's own sound up, down or off | Wind, traffic or talking clashes with the template music |
| Text | Edits the words the creator left editable | Adding a name, a date, a wish or a short caption |
Option names may differ slightly by app version, and not every template offers all of them.
Getting the crop right
Crop usually shows your full clip with a highlighted section the length of the slot. Slide it to the exact moment you want, such as the second your foot lands or your hair flips. You can often pinch or drag the picture to reframe it, which helps when a horizontal clip cuts off someone's head.
Writing text people can read
Keep each line short, around five or six words, so it can be read before the next cut. Keep text away from the right edge and the bottom of the screen, where Instagram and TikTok place their buttons and captions. If the template's font does not show your language properly, write in English or choose a template built for Hindi, Bangla or Urdu text.
Editor tip: Turn the original volume off on every clip unless the sound is part of the moment, like a laugh or a cheer. Background noise under the template music is the quickest way to make an edit sound cheap.
What can you change in a CapCut template, and what is locked?
You can usually change
Your photos and videos, which part of each clip plays, how each clip is framed, the volume of your own clips and any text the creator marked as editable. You can redo all of it as often as you like before exporting.
Usually locked
The song, the number of slots, the length of each slot, the transitions, the effects and the overall timing. These are the template's design. If you want a different song or more clips, pick another template or build the edit yourself in CapCut's normal editor.
Some templates use effects or fonts that need a CapCut Pro subscription. CapCut usually flags these before export, so you can decide whether to subscribe or pick a free template instead.
CapCut template use on a computer: what works?
CapCut's desktop app for Windows and Mac and its web editor at capcut.com both offer templates, but the selection and layout often differ from the phone app. Template links made for mobile also tend to work best on a phone. If you find a template while browsing on your computer, the easiest route is to send it to your phone.
Every template page on CCTemplates has a QR code for exactly this. Point your phone camera or Google Lens at it and the template opens in CapCut on your phone. Our guide to the CapCut template QR code explains scanning on Android and iPhone, and what to do when a code will not scan.
Why won't a template open or play properly?
Most problems have a simple cause. Match what you see to the list below.
- The CapCut Use template button is missing. This can happen when a template has been removed, your app is out of date, or templates are not offered in your region. Our guide to CapCut template not showing problems lists the fixes in order.
- The link opens in the browser. Check that CapCut is installed from an official store, as explained in our CapCut APK download guide, then open the link from your phone's main browser or try the backup link.
- The preview turns black. The effects may not have loaded, or one of your clips uses a format the template cannot read. See our CapCut template black screen fix.
- The app freezes while loading. Switch to Wi-Fi, close other apps and free some storage, then open the template again.
CapCut has been blocked in India since 2020, so template links do not open there, and availability in other countries can change. We do not share VPN or region workarounds.
Common mistakes that spoil a template edit
- Wrong orientation Horizontal clips in a vertical template get cropped hard, often cutting off heads and hands.
- Clips that are too short A clip shorter than its slot may be rejected or look frozen. Pick clips with a little extra length.
- The same shot again and again Near-identical clips make fast cuts feel like a glitch. Change the angle or distance between clips.
- Ignoring the music A calm clip on the beat drop wastes the template's best moment. Watch the preview before you pick.
- Posting people without asking Friends and family in your clips should be happy to appear. Ask before you post, especially when children are in the video.
Once the basics feel easy, try different styles. Slow motion CapCut templates are a good next step, because they reward careful clip choice even more than fast-cut edits do.
Questions people ask
Why can't I use template in CapCut?
The most common reasons are an old app version, a template the creator has removed, or templates not being offered in your region. Update CapCut from your official app store, restart your phone and open the link again. If the Use template button is still missing, try a different template to see whether the problem is the app or that one link.
Can I change the song in a CapCut template?
Usually not. The music is part of the template's design and every cut is timed to it, so most templates lock the song. If you need a different track, look for a template made with that song, or build the edit in CapCut's normal editor, where you control the audio fully. Swapping the song would break the beat sync anyway.
How many clips do I need for a CapCut template?
It depends on the template. Each one has a fixed number of slots, and every template card on our site shows the number of clips and the total duration before you open it. Some templates need only one photo, while photo dump styles can ask for twenty or more. Keep a few spare clips ready in case one looks wrong.
Can I use photos instead of videos in a CapCut template?
Yes, most templates accept both. Photos work well in short, beat-synced slots, while videos look better in slow or longer parts. Some templates are made for photos only and add zoom or 3D motion to each picture. If a slot is built for movement, such as a slow motion section, a video clip usually looks more natural there.
Do I need to log in to use CapCut template links?
Often you can open and use a template without signing in, but CapCut may ask you to log in for some templates, Pro features or cloud saving, and this can change with app updates. If templates do not load properly, signing in and updating the app are two quick checks worth trying before anything else.
Why does my template video look blurry after export?
Check three things. Export at 1080p instead of 720p, use clips filmed in good light, and avoid clips that were heavily zoomed or screen recorded at low quality. Also look at the upload quality setting in your social app, because some apps lower quality to save data. A clean, sharp original clip makes the biggest difference.
Can I save a template edit and finish it later?
Yes. CapCut usually keeps your template edit as a draft in the project list on the app's home screen, so you can come back, swap clips and export again. Drafts can be lost if you clear CapCut's data or uninstall the app, so export the final version to your gallery once you are happy with it.
